Method 2. Reset Lenovo Laptop Password Online (Windows 10/8.1/8)
The password used to login to Windows on your Lenovo laptop can be changed without going through the reset disk. All you have to do is visit the Microsoft Windows website and follow the following steps to reset the forgotten Lenovo laptop password.
It is necessary that you remember your Microsoft account username/email that you’d used at the time of the creation of a local account. This method only works when you have activated and used a Microsoft account on your Lenovo laptop.
Here are a few steps you can follow to reset Lenovo laptop password Windows 10/8:
Step 1. Get hold of another system (PC/ mobile), and visit https://account.live.com/password/reset to access the Microsoft homepage. This can be done from any browser.
Step 2. You will be prompted to enter your email address, phone number, or Skype id used for the account you’d used for logging into your Lenovo laptop to verify your identity. Enter the email, phone number, or skype name details and click “Next.”
Step 3. There are four methods to recover the account:
- Microsoft Authenticator App: This is an additional security layer on top of the password you’ve set up for login. In case you forget your Lenovo laptop password, you may log in easily with the Microsoft Authenticator app. You must have the app preinstalled on your phone to use this method. If you’ve already set up the app, you’ll be prompted to enter the code sent to your authenticator app, preinstalled on your mobile device. Enter the code and proceed to the next step. If you have not added this security layer to your account, use the next option.
- Password Reset through alternate email account: You may use this option if you had set up an alternate email account to recover this account. Create a new one if you did not have one.
- Text on the phone number linked to your Microsoft account: If you had linked a phone number to your Microsoft account, then you may also log in through it. Select the option “Text,” enter the last four digits of your associated contact number and click on “Get code” to receive a code as a text message, allowing you access to your account.
- Microsoft Account recovery code: If you do not have access to any of the options mentioned above, select “I don’t have any of these.” You’d be asked to enter a 25 character recovery code provided by Microsoft at the time of account creation. If you had it saved on an external device, enter the code to access your account.
In case none of the options mentioned above worked for you, click on “No.” You will be directed to a page where you’d have to enter any email address where Microsoft support will send you a code. This code can then be entered, and your email account can be accessed.
Considering that you’ve now accessed your account through any of the above options after verifying your identity, you can set a new password for your Microsoft account. After that, you can use this password to log into your Lenovo laptop.
